A Play On Words – 2nd Requirement
The 2nd Requirement of Skin ~
Tone Muscles and Increase Circulation
I believe all of us know the importance of toned muscles and good circulation, or at least we should. Without a doubt when both of these functions are at their optimum, we are increasing our chances for a healthier life. This holds true for the health of our skin as well.
Both skin specialists and clients understand that “toned” skin reflects youthful, radiant skin. The question is how do we really get these results? Quite simply, by meeting the 2nd requirement of skin – tone muscles and increasing blood flow on a consistent basis.
A Play on Words
For decades the word “tone” has been incorporated into our treatment rooms and home care regimens. However, I believe the meaning to “tone skin” has been mixed up in the esthetic industry. When we refer to tone, are we talking about the actual skin tone (melanin) or are we referring to the firmness of the skin?
The Difference Between Toners & Firming Muscles
Toners have been used for different purposes to try and solve a myriad of skin concerns ~ to balance pH, remove any excess dirt after cleansing, acne control, or to tighten the skin to name a few. This can be confusing for the professional and most certainly for the client. When taking a scientific approach to caring for skin, it is never ideal to mess with how the skin naturally functions. It is true we may need to do a wrong in order to make a right, but when doing so, caution should be used.
Firming Muscles – In order to tone muscles it will require the muscles to get stronger and firmer, just like when we work our muscles at the gym. When we work these muscles whether they be on our face or body, vascular activity is instantly increased within the skin. Blood nourishes our skin and takes toxins away. This is a key element in achieving healthy, radiant skin.
Ingredients & Modalities
With the advancement in product formulation and the different modalities available to professionals, the elevation to the esthetic industry is profound. Incorporating products formulated with ingredients that help to increase collagen production such as retinol, bakuchiol, peptides, hyaluronic acid, AHA’s, vitamin C, E, and niacin are extremely impactful for improving the client’s skin tone and firmness.
As for modalities, light therapy and micro-current are two of my favorites. Both are non-invasive and extremely powerful at improving the overall health of skin. Clients can expect immediate results. More to come on the extensive benefits that both machines offer.
Your clients need you to be more than someone who provides services. Educate them on meeting the requirements of skin as this is the only way they can achieve healthy skin and long-lasting results. Isn’t it time we remove the confusion for our clients and start putting the science of skin back into skincare?
